Santa Barbara Mayor Looking to Increase Business License Fees

March 21, 2012

Mayor Schneider has appointed herself as a one-person committee responsible for getting public approval on proposed increases to Santa Barbara, CA business license fees for downtown restaurants and bars. Since the increases are the Mayor’s idea, she has agreed to shoulder the full job of getting her proposal passed without involving the city council at all.

Schneider would like to get at least 9,000 signatures in the next three months, which would enable her to put the proposal on the November ballot for approval by voters. She plans on hitting the roads and visiting farmers markets and grocery stores to talk to residents, hear their opinions, and hopefully collect their signatures.

Keyt.com reports that the business license increases are part of a greater effort to increase fees across the board as a way of trying to help the city with budget problems. Also on the table for increases are, an increase in the city's sales tax with some funds going to the schools and a requirement for public safety employees to annually pay more into their pension plans.
