South Lake Tahoe May Change Business License Tax Structure

February 7, 2012

Council members will discuss a measure today, Tuesday, February 07, 2012, that would change the South Lake Tahoe, CA business license tax structure to decrease costs for smaller businesses and increase costs for larger businesses.

As Adam Jenson reports in the Tahoe Daily Tribune, “The proposed changes would decrease the taxes businesses pay on their gross receipts by approximately 5 percent, while increasing the cap on the business license tax from $3,448 to $20,000, according to a city staff report.”

This means a decrease in business license fees for 99% of the local businesses and an increase to only 1% of the businesses.

If council members agree to these changes to the business license fee structure, residents will be able to vote on the measure on the June 2012 ballot. If approved by voters, the new business license fee structure could go into effect as early as July 1, 2012.
