Steelville to Increase Business License Fees

Council members agreed to increase Steelville, MO business license fees from a current annual charge of $5.50 to $25. Council members discussed the suggested increase at a public hearing that was set up in order to hear business owners’ opinions on the increase.

The increase to business license fees will bring the price of a license more in line with the cost of issuing the license. Three Rivers Publishing reports, “Alderman Dave Hatcher pointed out that, while the current cost for a merchant’s license in the city is $5.50, in fact it costs at least $10 just to have one made, so an increase was needed just to cover the cost involved.”

Since neighboring localities charge much more than the current $5.50, council members felt no compunction at increasing their charge for a business license.

Council members also agreed to increase the charge of a Steelville peddlers license from 12.50 for three months, $25 for six months or $50 for a full year to $12.50 for a week, $25 for three months, $50 for six months or $100 for a year.

No business owners attended the public hearing to express their dissatisfaction at the new costs; council members therefore agreed to forward the proposed increases to city attorney to draft a new ordinance.
