Sturgis May Revise Temporary Business License Ordinance

March 27, 2012

In advance of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, held each August, city council members have proposed changing the temporary business license ordinance to call for an increase in licensing fees.

The increase to Sturgis, SD business license fees for temporary vendors is attributed to the increased costs in keeping the city clean during the motorcycle rally. City officials have proposed adding a sanitation fee to the regular business license charge that would increase business license fees from $425 to as much as $650 to help finance sanitation clean-up.

Also on the table for revision is the question of who is required to obtain the Sturgis temporary license. As Amanda Friar reports in Rapid City Journal. “The ordinance previously stated that non-profits, parking lots, raffles, bike washes and display only vendors were not required to pay the fee. The new ordinance states that the only groups who are exempt from the licensing fee will include religious, charitable or benevolent non profits, the sales of fruits and vegetables such as a farmers market, sales by 15-year-olds or younger hosting a lemonade stand or something similar, parking lots, and sales to wholesale or retail merchants.”

City councilors have already passed the second reading on the above discussed ordinance and they are hoping to get the new business licensing requirements enacted soon.
