Summit County Officials Agree to Increase Business License Fees

December 14, 2011

County council members voted last week in approval of the first increase to Summit, UT business license fees since 2004. At the same time council members agreed to lower business license fees for eligible county events.

Beginning in January of next year, Summit County plans on using an online system for all business license renewals. The increase in business license fees will help finance the new computer system. Business license fees for home-based businesses will be increased from $67.36 to $75 while commercial businesses will have licensing fees increased from $175.44 to $200.

County officials feel that the current business license costs are low enough that the minimal increases to licensing fees won't be too much to handle for local businesses.

The Park Record quotes Summit County clerk, Kent Jones having said, "We felt a modest raise was adequate to cover our costs. We're pretty reasonable on the costs for business licenses."

On the flip side, event vendors will be pleased with lowered fees as county officials reassessed the charges associated with event business licenses. Instead of the blanket $2,500 fee that was charged for each event, regardless of the size of the event, business license fees for local events will now be dependent on the amount of vendors present.

For example, an event that has five or fewer vendors will be charged $500 and an event that has between 6 and 20 vendors will be charged $1,000.

Business license changes occur in different localities each day.
