Toccoa Delays Business License Changes

January 18, 2012

City officials have agreed to put on hold until next year any changes to the Toccoa, GA business license fee schedule.

The gross receipts of profits earned play an important part in determining the business license fees for local Toccoa businesses. In order to verify that the information given by local companies for their gross receipts is equivalent to the actual amount earned; city officials suggested requiring a legal document, such as a 1040 income tax form, be filed together with the business license renewal docs.

Business owners displayed a negative reaction at the idea of revealing the personal information found on the 1040 income tax form and instead offered other suggestions of how city officials can verify the gross receipts of local companies.

Independent Mail reports that Toccoa city manager Mike Jackson has asked to continue with the old business license renewal system for this year while he tries to work out a new way for next year that will give the city the information they need without comprising on personal information.

“I think that (Toccoa city clerk) Fredda (Wheeler) and I are at the point where we would ask you to put this on hold, go back to the old way of doing business if you will for 2012 and task us with the writing of a new ordinance that we would bring back to you well in advance so that we can tweak it, look at it, change it, and get it right before the 2013 cycle,” Jackson said.
