Unlicensed Business Owner Arrested in Roseville

December 27, 2011

Police arrested Michele Walden, 45 for allegedly buying and selling scrap metals without obtaining a Roseville, CA business license. The arrest comes as part of a greater effort by police officers to stop the theft of scrap metals in Roseville.

State business license laws are strict for operators of scrap metal businesses. Authorities feel that by increasing regulations they will be able to more easily limit the now increasing theft of scrap metals. Scrap metal business owners must agree to the following regulations in order to qualify for a California business license.

They have to properly identify and document the metal sellers, including a drivers license number and photo ID, plus they cannot immediately pay cash for the metal. According to California law, recyclers must hold cash for three days or mail the seller a check for the sale.

News10 reports that Walden was violating state business license regulations by “buying catalytic converters and taking them to different recyclers to get money for precious metals" without obtaining a business license. She received customers by advertising her services on Craigslist but was ultimately tracked down by police through that same website.
