Wentzville Aldermen Debate Business License Requirement

January 25, 2012

At a city work session last week, the Board of Aldermen debated the pros and cons of the Wentzville, MO business license requirements. Some aldermen felt that the small financial income that the city receives from the business license fees may not justify the effort it takes to collect the fees.

As Joe Scott reports in Wentzville Patch, “During the meeting, Ward 2 Alderman Chris Gard said that given the time and effort the city puts into collecting from businesses that don’t pay the $50 business license fee on time, the $30,000 in funds the city receives might not be worth the effort.”

The city sends police officers to incompliant businesses to ensure their payment of business license charges.

Other aldermen felt that the monetary gain isn’t the only benefit of business license filings. As in other cities across the nation, business license applications are used as a way of keeping track of local businesses.

“What I’m finding is that there are a lot of reasons behind it,” Community Development Director Doug Forbeck told aldermen. For example emergency contact information provided on business license forms are turned over to the city police and fire department for use in emergencies.

The aldermen will consult with city staff and the city attorney before further discussion - now scheduled for the February 8 board meeting.
