Williston May Change Business License Ordinance

March 2, 2012

Council members are considering changing the Williston, SC business license ordinance to include a motion that would require business owners to provide copies of their income tax returns when filing for a local business license.

Williston business license fees are based on the business class and on the gross income the business earned in the previous year. Council members are afraid that many businesses are underreporting their income in order to save on business license fees.

Copies of income tax returns will make the verification process of businesses’ gross receipts much easier for city officials.

The People Sentinel reports that “out of 10 responses to a question Town Clerk Angie Overton sent out to other clerks in the state, only one did not require the verification of income for business licenses.” As such city officials feel comfortable instituting this requirement.

No decision has yet been made by the Williston council members in regard to this requirement.
