Brawley City Delays Business License Increases

Council members unanimously voted to delay increasing Brawley, CA business license fees.

The measure had been scheduled to be voted on by local residents on the November 8 ballot and was now removed. City officials were afraid that requesting residents to approve increases of business license fees would negatively affect another measure on the ballot.

The utility users’ tax used to fund city services is set to expire this year and council members have introduced Measure K to continue the tax on the November ballot. Since the funds from the utility users’ tax is more important to city officials than increasing business license fees, they decided to delay requesting business license fee increases, in hope that residents won’t be turned off by too many calls for money.

The intended increases would have only affected some businesses. As Imperial Valley Press reports, “The measure was considered a ‘housecleaning’ effort that would have increased business licensing fees to certain businesses.”
