Chicago Residents Complain about Unlicensed Vendors

Residents living near Senka Park in the south side of Chicago have been complaining about vendors selling food in the park without acquiring the necessary Chicago business licenses. These vendors are violating basic Chicago food vendor license regulations by selling home-prepared food from dirty carts and leaving garbage remnants strewn over park areas.

Unemployed residents have turned to pushcart vending as a means of making quick cash without too much investment.  Legalizing their food vending operation by acquiring the necessary mobile vendors licenses requires too much time, effort and cash for these small-time vendors. They are also trying to avoid paying the necessary business license tax that would come along with legalizing their sales.

As resident Robert Frederick told a SunsHerald reporter, “They do not follow the Board of Health rules, and without a business license they pay no taxes.”

City officials have nominated certain areas as ‘no peddling’ zones, Senka Park included. Unlicensed vendors are violating the city’s ‘no peddling’ rule as well.

With complaints on the rise, police have begun conducting raids to try and curb the unlicensed vending taking place.
