Columbus Officials Cracking Down on Unlicensed Vendors

City officials have decided to pursue individuals who are selling goods on public sidewalks without obtaining the necessary Columbus business permits. While most private vendors make sure to acquire the proper vendors permits before selling their wares, individuals operating under the umbrella of farmers markets have neglected the requirement of getting business permits.

City officials feel it is their responsibility to prevent these vendors from conducting sales although nearby residents appreciates the variety of goods available for sale by the vendors. As the Columbus Dispatch quotes Business License Officer Ralph Jones having said, “Farmers markets or any other vendors operating on city sidewalks are doing so against the law.”

Vendors at the Pearl Market held every Tuesday and Friday downtown are especially affected by the crackdown as most sellers do not have the necessary Columbus vendors permits and are selling goods on public sidewalks. The organizer of the Pearl Market event is trying to work with city officials to change the ordinance in a way that would accommodate existing vendors’ sales.
