Crawford may be the First Town in North Fork Valley to Require Business Licenses

Crawford town staff met last week to discuss the possibility of introducing a town business license. This year's budget deficit and a need for additional town funds have led town leaders to suggest being the first town in North Fork to begin charging business license fees.

When discussing the possibility of instituting business licenses, Mayor Jim Crook pointed out that town business licenses would not only generate additional funds to town coffers, it would also provide a means for the city to keep a better accounting of local businesses.

Suggested business license fees range from $10 to $100; and aside for bringing in additional revenue, license fees would also have to cover the cost of implementing a license system. With so few local businesses, a $25 annual business license charge would only net the town $500 each year.

Council members agreed that any business required to obtain a State of Colorado business license would be required to obtain a local Crawford business license.

Crawford town leaders will use the Town of Cedaredge’s business license ordinance as a sample when writing their own ordinance.
