Disincorporation of Vernon would Result in Business License Freeze

The many businesses located in the ‘exclusively industrial’ City of Vernon would be subject to a business licensing fee freeze for five years if the state goes through with the disincorporation of the city.

Vernon, a California city, has fewer than 100 residents and is largely a business and industrial hub. City employees and their relatives, make up the majority of the residential sector. The city has a long history of legislative corruption by the city leaders.

According to John Vigna, aide to Assembly Speaker John Pérez, “Over the last 30 years the city has taken a lot of moves that have created this situation where the city has complete control over its electorate. The fact is the reforms they have put forward are absolutely toothless. They’ve done nothing to change. They want to preserve their status quo. Right now from our office’s view disincorporation is the only way that gets rid of corruption,” as quoted in Capital Weekly.

A Vernon business license fee freeze is only one small way businesses in the city will be affected by the area’s losing its status of ‘city.’
