Elgin Cracks Down on Unlicensed Businesses

March 6, 2012

With 13 percent of the city’s businesses failing to comply with the Elgin, IL business license requirements, council members have decided to take drastic measures in ensuring compliance. City officials will be sending letters to unlicensed businesses informing them of their options: pay up or appear in court.

Since early 2011, the city has been facing opposition to its business license requirements by a group of business owners who have developed an organization to fight the city’s licensing regulations. Members of the group, called Elgin OCTAVE , have tried numerous means to get the business license ordinance repealed.

While until now city officials have vacillated in their response to the group, generally going with the lighter approach of sympathetic listening to the complaints by Elgin OCTAVE, they have now decided to take a stronger stance and insist that all local businesses come into compliance and apply for a city business license.

BocaJump reports that “Enforcement could mean the threat of penalties such as daily fines of as much as $750 for scofflaws.”

Business license compliance is mandatory on national, federal and local levels. Operating without proper state, county and city business licenses can cost business owners thousands in fines and penalties as well as needless aggravation and problems. Business owners are urged to take advantage of Business Licenses’ "Business License Compliance Package™"  which explains exactly which licenses, permits, and tax registrations are required for your business, ensuring license compliance on every level.
