Escondido Cracks Down on Unlicensed Businesses

March 19, 2012

MuniServices LLC, a municipal revenue enhancement services company, has estimated that 15% of businesses at any given region are unlicensed. MuniServices uses a tracking program to get hold of the unlicensed businesses and ensure their compliance with local business licensing requirements. Escondido council members have recently decided to hire MuniServices LLC to track down unlicensed local businesses.

North County Times reports that Mayor Sam Abed said the crackdown on unlicensed businesses would send a message that Escondido doesn't tolerate fly-by-night businesses and it will help merchants who pay their annual license fees become more competitive.

"Any of us who drive around town see a lot of questionable businesses," Abed said during the council hearing on the crackdown. "You see a retail store that's all of the sudden doing taxes and then auto insurance. It's obvious these guys don't have a license for all these diverse businesses."

MuniServices’ representatives will compare the list of businesses paying state taxes with those who have registered for an Escondido, CA business license. Those who are operating without a proper city business license will be contacted by a representative and asked to come into compliance.

The city estimates that the outside consultant will help bring in approximately $60,000 in unpaid business license fees. 40% of that amount will be taken by MuniServices as payment for their services.

Business license compliance is mandatory on national, federal and local levels. Operating without proper state, county and city business licenses can cost business owners thousands in fines and penalties as well as needless aggravation and problems. Business owners are urged to take advantage of Business Licenses’ "Business License Compliance Package™"  which explains exactly which licenses, permits, and tax registrations are required for your business, ensuring license compliance on every level.
