Fernley Franchise Fees to Increase by 1%

In a vote of 4-1 council members of the City of Fernley voted for Bill # 165 to increase franchise fees by 1% against residents’ wishes. Although the increase only targets public utilities, homeowners will feel the burden as utility providers will pass on the charge to their customers.

Fernley City Clerk, Lena Shumway claims that the increases will affect householders by only $2 - $4 a month, whereas the money generated for the city will amass to $250,000.00 a year. These funds are urgently needed to help close up the $2.7 million deficit the city is experiencing.

Teacher Christine Washington-Walker told the Council that she has students who can't afford school supplies, and added that their families will not be able to afford increases to their water or electric bills, as reported in RGJ.

However, the bill is slated to go into effect September 1, 2011.
