Kentucky Businessman's "Master" Business License Offer Rejected

Hazel, KY City Council Members have rejected the request made by Charlie’s Antique Mall owner Ray Gough to modify its business licensing ordinance to allow Gough to purchase an, as yet unprecedented in this city, “master” business license. Gough offered to pay $12,000 to end legal action as well as $3,000 annually for a “master” business license to cover licensing fees for himself and vendors renting booth space in his mall.

However the city has refused Gough’s offer and instead voted to turn the verdict over to court to resolve the dispute.

According to Murray Ledger, the reasons the council members rejected the proposal included ‘the necessity of all persons doing business in Hazel pay $25 annually for a business licensing fee in obedience to the law, requests from city residents that the law be enforced and a desire to see the matter settled objectively by the court.’

Gough plans on spending an additional $10,000 - $20,000 to improve his business if he receives a positive verdict. However, in the interim, Charlie’s Antique Mall has been closed since February 13, 2011 when the city originally refused Gough’s offer.
