Henagar Considers Ways of Cracking Down on Unlicensed Businesses

February 22, 2012

City officials have recently realized that they have no enforcement method in place to ensure compliance to Henagar, AL business license regulations. Council members discussed this issue at a council meeting last week.

"There needs to be enforcement," Councilwoman Lorretta Shankles said at the meeting. "What happens if the business is given a notice to purchase or renew a license, and they don't take action?"

Councilmen suggested instituting a one-a-year business license renewal date instead of the previous method of having businesses renew whenever their individual business licenses expire. This way the city will have a more organized listing for use in going after businesses that haven’t acquired or renewed their Henagar business licenses.

As the Times-Journal reports, “The council proposed an ordinance to create a March 1 deadline for business license renewals for existing businesses. Shankles said if licenses are not renewed by the deadline, businesses would be charged a penalty.”

Council members will discuss the ordinance further at the February 27, 2012 council meeting.

Business license compliance is mandatory on national, federal and local levels. Operating without proper state, county and city business licenses can cost business owners thousands in fines and penalties as well as needless aggravation and problems.
