Nine Augusta Hotels Avoid Losing Their Business Licenses

In an effort to raise much-needed cash, city officials tried collecting the combined sum of $127,000 in back taxes and fees from hotels. They threatened nine Augusta hotels that they would lose their business licenses if they don’t pay the taxes by the end of the week.

The city gave the hotels until July 1 to pay up, but all the hotels paid yesterday, June 27, 2011. As License and Inspections Director Rob Sherman said, quoted by News 12, "I would rather make the payment than get closed down."
