Philadelphia Cracking Down on Lapsed Business Licenses

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Licenses and Inspections Commissioner Fran Burns gave warnings to individuals who did not file for the correct business licenses and business license renewals.

Approximately 66,000 of last year’s business licenses were not yet renewed this year. According to NewsWorks, the unpaid licensing fees amount to approximately $3,000,000.00 of government revenue.

Burns mailed notices to the first 1,600 business owners urging them to come into compliance within the next 45 days. Anyone coming into compliance within the 45 day grace period will not have to pay late fee penalties and fines.

Any business that fails to come into compliance will have to choose between paying for a new license, or face being closed down.

As the Mayor said “Our entire city government and the Department of License and Inspections want to do everything and will do everything in our power to help businesses open and operate in the city. You also need to meet us halfway to make sure you have the appropriate license and if you were issued one make sure to get it renewed.
