Secondhand Shop Dealers Must Now Obtain Hudson Falls Business License

Hudson Falls board members unanimously voted on the passing of a law that would compel local secondhand shop dealers to obtain a costly business license.

Secondhand shop owners will be charged a one-time fee of $750 for registering their business and will have to pay $200 annually for an updated license. They will also be required to post a $1,000 bond with the village when applying for the license that will remain in the village’s hands as long as their business is open.

The city will use the bond as a way of ensuring the dealer’s compliance with licensing regulations. As explained by The Post-Star, “If for any reason the secondhand dealer violates the terms of the law, the village can revoke the license and keep the $1,000 bond.”

Local dealers must apply for a license within the next six months. If a dealer is found without the required license, he will have to pay a fine up to $1,000.

General business law requires all businesses to carry a current business license. Washington County however, does not have an ordinance in place for secondhand shops and neither did Hudson Falls. The passing of Hudson Falls Secondhand dealer law has pushed Washington County supervisors to propose similar measures of registering secondhand shops.
