Springfield Proposes New Scrap Dealer License Regulations

With the value of the U.S. dollar falling and the price of metal increasing, scrap metal theft has become a real issue in many cities nationwide. In an effort to try and combat the rising instances of scrap metal theft, Springfield alderman have proposed imposing stricter regulations on scrap dealer business licenses.

In order to obtain a Springfield, IL business license, scrap dealers would have to maintain a legible database with written records of all their transactions. The dealers would have to ascertain the age of their sellers and buyers through the use of a valid I.D., and business can only be conducted with adults over the age of 18.

In order to dissuade thieves from earning quick cash, the city will eliminate any exchanges of scrap metal for cash and instead instruct dealers to mail a check after a three-day waiting period has elapsed.

The State Journal Register reports that a fire resulting from a copper metal theft, coming at the heels of a rash of copper thefts, has prompted the proposal of scrap metal sales regulations.

As reported, “Sherri Westerfield’s home on East Cornell Avenue caught fire last week after copper wiring was stolen from a nearby utility pole. She was awakened early that morning by a State Journal-Register delivery person who saw smoke coming from her home.
