Springfield Residents may Vote on E-Verify Program that would Affect Business Licenses

A group of residents called Ozarks Minutemen filed a petition last week that would mandate the use of the government E-Verify system in the City of Springfield. If passed, violators of the petition could be fined up to $500 and risk losing their Springfield business licenses.

As reported by KY3, “The City of Springfield could levy fines, and suspend or take away business licenses for places caught hiring those in the country unlawfully. “

The Minutemen include around a dozen residents who are passionately opposed to illegal immigration and would like to enforce a program that would force businesses to stop hiring illegal non-residents. Current Missouri law requires all state contractors to use the E-verify program to check legal status of their employees. As such, the system is already being used by the City of Springfield and would only need a bit more work to be incorporated city-wide.

The ordinance will be subject to either the approval of the city council members or a majority vote by residents before it can be passed into a law.
