St. Clair to go After Unlicensed Businesses

February 2, 2012

City aldermen agreed Tuesday not to take prompt action against businesses who have missed the January 31 deadline to renew their St. Clair, MO business licenses. In previous years, city officials allowed delinquent businesses a couple of months grace period before taking legal action against them.

"You may recall that in 2011, it was May or June when I brought the list of delinquent businesses to the board and gave them to City Attorney Kurt Voss  to take action," City Administrator Rick Childers said during the Jan. 16 board meeting. "I will not do that this year. The response to get the business license is Feb. 1. At our next board meeting (Feb. 6), I will bring you a list of businesses that have not complied, and I will give it to Mr. Voss."

The EMissourian reports that delinquent businesses have to pay 10% a month of the $50 renewal fee as a penalty for late filing. Business license regulations also permit city officials to shut down a business that is operating without a current business license.

Business license compliance is mandatory on national, federal and local levels. Operating without proper state, county and city business licenses can cost business owners thousands in fines and penalties. Business owners are urged to take advantage of Business Licenses’ "Business License Compliance Package™"  which explains exactly which licenses, permits, and tax registrations are required for your business, ensuring license compliance on every level.
