Voters to Decide between two Hermosa Beach Business License Increases

Council members approved an initiative that would place another Hermosa Beach business license increase suggestion on the November ballot. Local resident Jim Lissner had already collected the signatures necessary to put his business license fee increase proposal up for approval by voters.

Residents will decide between Lissner’s measure aimed at drastically increasing business license fees for local nightspots and the city’s much more conservative suggestion of slightly increasing license fees across the board.

The city initiated their own business license increase suggestion to counteract the ones proposed by Lisner. Many residents and city officials feel that if Lissner’s proposal will pass, it will have serious repercussions on damaging the restaurant industry in the city.

“If that initiative passes, we’re going to have a ghost town,” former Mayor Barks told council members, quoted in the Beach Reporter. “You need a competitive proposal. I ask you to do that. Come back with something that’s fair.”

Council members feel that their initiative is fair and they are hopeful that voters will choose to pass it over Lissner’s.
