Some Home Rentals May Require Business License in Wellfleet, MA

Owners of dwellings in Wellfleet, Massachusetts who rent their homes to vacationers may now have to purchase a business license. The board of selectmen voted on Tuesday to hold a public hearing on June 14 to decide if the town should require rental business licenses from individuals renting their homes/cottages for short amounts of time.

According to Cape Cod Times, “The goal of the licensing is to ensure that private property rentals comply with state health and building codes.”

If passed, individuals who rent their homes for more than 14 days a year would be required to purchase a $70.00 annual license starting January 1, 2012. Officials estimate this would bring in approximately $50,000 revenue to town funds.
