Wetumpka Ordinance Addresses Unlicensed Vendors

Wetumpka council members unanimously voted to pass an ordinance banning unlicensed vendors from selling wares in any public area. The ordinance went into effect last week.

There have been numerous complaints about people selling merchandise on public property along Highway 231. Under the guise of running a yard sale, residents have been selling goods on a weekly basis without purchasing the necessary business licenses.

As explained by Peggy Blackburn in The Wetumpka Herald, “Those involved had basically turned the “yard sales” into businesses of sorts, with the same folks set up every week. They weren’t paying any kind of space rental fees. And from what I’ve been able to discover, except for one spot the vendors hadn’t obtained permission from property owners, whether public or private.”

This illegal brand of flea marketing was hurting licensed consignment and second-hand shops. With the approved ordinance, police officers can now order unlicensed vendors to close shop.
