Buckeye may Increase Business License Fees

October 24, 2011

Town council members spent some time at a study session last week reviewing Buckeye, Arizona’s business license fees. They then agreed to vote next Tuesday, November 1, 2011 over whether or not to increase the cost for obtaining a local business license.

The town had hired Willdan Financial Services, a consultant agency, 2 years ago to compare the fees charged in Buckeye to the fees charged by neighboring cities. "To be honest, we tried to do that to a certain extent as kind of sanity check to make sure we weren't out of line," Woody Scoutten, development services director said.

The results however were unclear as council members struggled to determine the rationale behind the fees charged by other cities at the study session last week.

Whereas Buckeye would like to base the fees charged on the costs involved in delivering services, other communities have different measures for determining their fees.

As AZCentral quotes Woody Scoutten having said, "It's very much an apples-and-oranges kind of a situation. Their fees vary, their approach on calculating fees vary, so it's very difficult to try to put us into that spreadsheet and say 'here's how we compare with the other communities.'"

An example of a proposed fee increase is the $25.00 application fee for obtaining a circus business license in addition to a $100 daily fee charged for running the show.

If council members approve the increased license fees, business owners can expect the changes to be implemented by December 1, 2011.
