Greenwood may Impose a Business License Tax on Non-Profits

January 24, 2012

Financial woes have caused Greenwood city council to consider a novel idea, tax the non-profits along with the other local businesses. This is an unprecedented step in South Carolina as all other localities do not expect non-profits to pay business license fees.

Council members feel that non-profits who provide goods and services should be contributing a percentage of the money earned, to help shoulder some of the city services.

7 on Your Side reports that the Greenwood, SC business license tax would affect “a number of health care groups, church daycares, and charity thrift stores.” If passed, the one affected the most by the new ordinance would be Self Regional Hospital. The profits earned by Self Regional Hospital annually would make their business license taxes a whopping $350,000 each year, with the total income from business license taxes from all non-profits being $400,000.

Business owners and residents had their turn to voice their opinions on the proposed tax at a public hearing last night, Monday, January 23, 2012.

Business license changes occur in different localities each day. Large businesses can save the time and effort it would take to uncover changes in each branch location by outsourcing business license management to licensing experts. Business Licenses’ Outsourced Business License Management Service allows big businesses to outsource business license filing, maintenance and renewal for all their required business licenses & permits with every licensing authority in the U.S.
