Los Angeles Police Arrest Owner of Unlicensed Business

Prosecutors arrested three people on Wednesday in an undercover investigation on a dairy farm and the farmers market associated with it, both of which do not have state or local business licenses.

Sharon Ann Palmer, the owner of Healthy Family Farms and her employee, Eugenie Victoria Bloch, had been producing unpasteurized dairy products and selling them to the public without obtaining either a Santa Paula business license or a Ventura business license.

Many of the products from Healthy Family Farms were being sold at Rawesome Farmers Market in Venice. Its owner, James Cecil Stewart, was also arrested for allegedly operating a farmers market without either a Venice business license or a Los Angeles business license.

The city has licensing laws in place in order to be able to regulate businesses and the goods they produce and sell. Especially in the case of a farm or market selling unpasteurized products; these pose a risk to buyers because of the unhygienic conditions used to produce the goods.

As Mercury News reports, “Officials raided and inspected both locations last year and described what they saw as unsanitary conditions, such as raw, uncovered chicken stored near dairy products at the farm's refrigerator which could lead to potential contamination.”

Farms and farmers markets are urged to come into compliance with licensing regulations in order to avoid potential harmful situations.
