Should Non-Profits Pay Business License Fees?

February 29, 2012

What may have been looked at as an undisputable fact, is now being questioned by many city officials. Should non-profits be required to pay business license fees? And even more importantly, what constitutes a non-profit organization to make them exempt from paying business license fees?

Reno council members are considering the possibility of instituting a Reno, NV business license tax to specific types of non-profit organizations. Councilman Dave Aiazzi introduced this idea by pointing out that some local non-profits are in truth generating large profits and as such should be responsible for paying business license fees along with regular local businesses.

Aiazzi gave two local businesses as an example, Renown Health and Truckee Meadows. “They make millions and millions of dollars here,” Aiazzi said. “I don’t see how they’re any different from other businesses in this community.”

RGJ reports that “the city of Las Vegas charges a business license fee to organizations that charge for their services. Washoe County requires nonprofits (with the exception of churches) to get a business license.”

Additionally, as detailed in an earlier post, Greenwood, SC council members recently suggested instituting a business license tax for non-profits. The topic remains under discussion by many city officials across the nation.

Business license changes occur in different localities each day. Large businesses can save the time and effort it would take to uncover changes in each branch location by outsourcing business license management to licensing experts. Business Licenses’ Outsourced Business License Management Service allows big businesses to outsource business license filing, maintenance and renewal for all their required business licenses & permits with every licensing authority in the U.S.
